When is white gold white gold?
When a consumer enters a store to purchase an item of gold jewelry, whether it is yellow or red then checking the mark (if purchased in the United Kingdom), they can tell at a glance, using a magnifying glass if it is 9 or 18 carat, for example – the color is fairly obvious. White gold is a different story. Yes, they can check the carat weight just as easily, but what color? They looking at the alloy Gold is real or a thin coating of rhodium metal dress underneath?
First a few facts.
24K is yellow.
White gold is produced by adding a rigorous selection of white metals as gold yellow bleach. Bleaching of solid metals are palladium, nickel and platinum. Moderate bleaching white metals are silver and zinc.
This tends to produce historically two classes of white gold, nickel and palladium alloys.
Because the price of palladium, the whites of palladium alloys are more expensive and more white.
Many low-quality commercial white gold alloys do not produce an acceptable level of whiteness for the consumer, so it became common practice for manufacturers of jewelry rhodium plate to give the beautiful Â'ice white "color that is associated with gold white.
Rhodium is a member of the platinum and a thin electrolytic deposit is applied to the surface of most jewelry white gold sold in retail stores to improve its appearance.
Many customers are confused by the white gold and does not necessarily include what they are buying when they buy jewelry in white gold.
When you buy gold jewelry white here are some questions that may be desirable to ask:
1. Is it rhodium plated?
2. How long does it take before the rhodium plating will wear off?
3. How White is the gold plating as compared to rhodium and yellowish brown spots reveal that door?
