The Maze procedure is open heart surgery which is used to treat the condition called atrial fibrillation. Before looking at that and respond the question we need to know how the heart works and what it consists of so everything will be clear to you.
The heart is a complex organ in both how it is composed and how it actually works, you can understand given the work he must do and how it is vital to our everyday life – if something does not work properly, it frequently results in an enormous loss of quality of life and is the cause of death for many people.
Image two sets of two rooms stacked on each other – the larger, upper pair of chambers are known as the atria (singular is atrium) and their job is to collect the blood after it has passed through the lungs and is full of oxygen to be distributed throughout the body. Once they are full, they contract and it forces blood through the smaller, the lower pair of rooms which are called ventricles. The ventricles then contract, it forces the blood around the body under pressure – it is the twin set by contractions of the atria than and followed by the ventricles below gives us the double-beat signature of a healthy heart and is known to doctors as sinus rhythm.
This double-beat process must be coordinated to the headset knows when to contract and force blood into the ventricle smaller – if it misses the beat, less blood is pushed into the ventricle may not be ready to receive the blood first. The trigger for the atrium to contract an electric signal sent from what is known as the sinus node (or node SV). This signal travels through the atrium and ends at the atrio-ventricular node (or AV node) – note that the ventricles contract, whatever the signal, they do not need this particular impetus contract.
Now imagine that the signal is somewhat disrupted and the atrium does not contract when it is supposed to – try the atrium pumping blood into the ventricle, but the ventricle is not ready. This is known as atrial fibrillation is caused by the electrical impulse in holding a short cut that bypasses the atrium. While the conditions may be alleviated if the patient is not conscious of it or can easily accommodated without any intervention, other cases need medication or the use of catheters to regulate and control the situation. In severe cases, open heart surgery is required and the particular operation is the Maze procedure.
The surgeon makes a series of incisions around the atrium, which are then sewn up – the result looks like a labyrinth of the child (hence the name). After the operation, the atrium is able to retain blood and contract normally, but the electrical signal can not overcome the barriers created by the incisions – it must follow the path that was created by the Maze procedure. This stops the signal around the atrium and ensures a healthy sinus rhythm is established again, but in some cases, a coach must be inserted because the SV node has been damaged as a result of the disease.
